I recently completed a Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) training course, gaining valuable marine mammal monitoring and mitigation skills! 🐬

The course covered key aspects of the role, including species identification, observation techniques, and implementing mitigation measures to minimise human impact on marine life. We also had a fantastic day out on the boat, where we put our skills into practice in a real-world setting! 🚢🔭

It was a great experience to take part in such a hands-on course—thank you, Stephanie Barnicoat CMarSci CSci MIMarEST!

University of Exeter
This week, our MSc Marine Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation students have been offshore in Falmouth, completing Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) training through Ocean Watch.

The MMO course equips students with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to work as MMOs offshore, not only gaining an understanding of the impacts of underwater noise pollution and related policies, but also key skills in surveying and identifying marine mammals.

Whilst putting their new skills to the test, the students were lucky enough to be joined by a pod of common dolphins!

Thanks to Stephanie Barnicoat from Ocean Watch for running the course.

Thank you so much Stephanie Barnicoat CMarSci CSci MIMarEST for running an amazing MMO course!

I had such a great time learning all about marine mammal risk and mitigation during offshore development and surveying. I now can’t wait to take this training forward with me in my career 🐬

I had an absolutely amazing time participating in the Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) training course🌊

This experience deepened my understanding of the vital role Marine Mammal Observers play in protecting marine life, while also providing valuable insight into how underwater noise from human activities impacts marine mammals. I was also incredibly fortunate to see my first porpoises and seals—an unforgettable and truly unique experience.

On top of that, I had the chance to meet and learn alongside some incredible people who also participated in the course, making the experience even more special. A huge thank you to Stephanie Barnicoat CMarSci CSci MIMarEST for her expert guidance and engaging training sessions. I learned so much and gained valuable skills that I’m excited to apply in the field.

If you're passionate about marine wildlife, I couldn't recommend this course more.🐋

Feeling well prepared now having completed Ocean Watch MMO Training with the wonderful and experienced Stephanie Barnicoat CMarSci CSci MIMarEST. Two days of theory, roleplay and quizzes followed by a sunny boatrip in south Cornwall (and five harbour porpoises and a curious seal)
